National Anthem at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

It's an unparalleled feeling to listen to the national anthem being played at the Olympic Games. The sight of the tricolor moving up, above other flags, is the epitome of glory.

Abhinav Bindra has made India proud and spread great happiness across the country. I hope that this is the beginning of many more sporting feats to come India's way. I may be asking too much, but I wish that there is a time when sports takes over politics in our country.

And ya ... Abhinav, an MBA, has shown that study and sport can go hand-in-hand!

Why this gold is more special is that its the first time an individual has won a gold in Olympics for India!

The last was in 1980 by the hockey team!

Really happy for Abhinav! And for India. And I hope other sports teams from India take this cue and aim at getting more!

That's the sad part ... this is the first Olympic games since 1928 where the Hockey challenge started without the 8-time Gold Medalist ...

With all the money in Cricket ... it's ironical that India lost the Cricket test series the same day as the first individual GOLD at the Olympic Games.

yes dear. everytime i see the US anthem being played when US wins gold, i secretly pray one day ours will too. but the sad part is that we dont have the kind of facilities that the US sportsmen train in which gives them the biggest advantage. they have too much money and we have too much poverty. the real reason bindra could win is because he had been to olympics before and could create the setup in his backyard to hone his skill... just like Eklavya. there are thousands of eklavya in india but they can not create the practise arena in their backyard like bindra.

ever windered by people are showering money over him as opposed to putting that money in creating training facilities? being a finance person i know that throwing money at bindra will yield the highest and fastest rate of return because he will oblige you with his presence at your events and people will flock to see him. nothing wrong with that, of course.

i am proud of an india of the stature of abhinav bindra. he reminds me of the quote very close to my heart - the height that great men reach are not attained in sudden flight. but when their companions slept, they were toiling up in the night.

god bless you mr. bindra.

The quote that you have mentioned is indeed true to its word, but the hard fact of the modern world is that an individual needs facilities to toil up in the night. In a recent report on NBC, it was mentioned that the US Olympic swimming team is accompanied by a team of engineers/scientists who track each movement of the swimmers and provide analysis for improvement, add to that the new laser made swimsuits that have less friction that the human body and training at a multi-billion dollar facility specially made for the Olympic games preparation. Micheal Phelps, the so-called greatest Olympian ever, is not only a product of his hard work and talent, but a huge support system that backs him up.

I strongly feel that sports can be a biggest uniting factor for our country, which is plagued with increasing sectarianism. Cricket has been a unifying factor and its time that we motivate our people to take up all kinds of sports. Imagine, if the immense amount of energy wasted by people in India in complaints, agitations and violence is channelized towards sports, then we would be minting gold at any games event. This would have a double effect by reducing damage and increasing happiness for every Indian.
